a BMW is a BMW, it's quality. But altough I own a E46, I would never buy a compact. Just an optical opinion tbh, I just don't like them. But hey, if you like it, buy it :)

Don't listen to the people who say that it looks ugly. It's different but it has something special. You will get used to it. If you like it go and find one that suits your needs and budget. If you get a 6 cylinder it will be even better.

Had a 320td e46 compact remapped to 210hp. Awesome little cars to drive and I don’t think they’re that ugly personally.

i own one and i got used to the look. Its 6 years now and i am still happy that i bought it. I know that coupe looks much much better, but half the price for technically same car is strong argument too. .... Well, technically, its even better car, its lighter and doesnt have that infamous rear axle problems of e46s.

Had one, was a brilliant drive. It was my first car and even the looks grew on me. It wasnt the most reliable car to own though.

The car engineered to feel cheap. The interior materials are rougher than E46 on purpose. Not because they cost less for BMW, but because they wanted you to feel you're sitting in a cheap car. Most engines are just gutless, you have to go for the uber-rare Si or 325 models if you want a proper BMW feel.

Good to know everyone agrees that the compactes are ugly as shit. I personally think that the E36 is less ugly than the E46 though

I heard that compact is so well balanced that it's really budget drift car, it's not the most beautiful car in the world but hey, it's cheap, RWD and there are a lot of aftermarket parts availble

Compact is the same E46 coupe, only better, cheaper and uglier. Great car if you want to learn how to drive hard, without caring.
